What is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are aromatic volatile liquids distilled from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. Unlike vegetable oils such as olive oil, corn oil or peanut oil, essential oils are not greasy, do not clog the pores, and cannot go rancid. Essential oils are highly concentrated and far more potent than dried herbs due to the distillation process used to create essential oils. For example 1 drop of peppermint oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. An entire plant may be required to produce a single drop of distilled essential oil.

Essential oils are chemically very complex, consisting of hundreds of chemical compounds. Any given essential oil may contain 80 to 300 different chemical constituents. Depending on its chemistry, an essential oil can have widely different therapeutic actions. For example basil (botanical name Ocimum basilicum), can have widely different therapeutic action depending on its chemistry. Depending on its chemistry, basil may have primarily antiseptic properties, primarily anti-inflammatory properties, or both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Furthermore variations such as temperature and pressure in the way essential oils are extracted or distilled have dramatic effects on their chemistry and medicinal action. And the presence of other chemicals from pesticides, herbicides, solvents, and extenders alters the therapeutic action of essential oils.

Unlike the chemically altered essential oils sold for personal pleasure and used in perfumes, candles, and bath products, therapeutic grade essential oils need to be pure, unadulterated and made from organic material to insure consistent quality and properties. Due to the inferior quality and adulterated essential oils that have been produced that do not produce therapeutic results and can possibly be toxic, a set of standards establishing the chemical profile and principal constituents that a quality essential oil should have was established. ISO certification and certification of meeting the stringent International AFNOR standards provide guidelines to distinguish a therapeutic grade essential oil from a lower grade essential oil that may have similar chemical makeup and fragrance but inferior and different properties and effects. Only 2% of the essential oils produced today meet these standards for therapeutic and medicinal applications.
