SPF FACTS

Sunscreens protect your skin by absorbing and/or reflecting UVA and UVB rays. The FDA requires that all sunscreens contain a Sun Protection Factor
(SPF) label. The SPF reveals the relative amount of sunburn protection that a sunscreen can provide an average user when correctly used.

Sunscreens with an SPF of at least 15 are recommended. You should be aware that an SPF of 30 is not twice as protective as an SPF of 15; rather, when properly used, an SPF of 15 protects the skin from 93 percent of UVB radiation, an SPF 30 sunscreen provides 97 percent protection, and an SPF 50 sunscreen provides 99 percent protection.

If you think the sunscreen with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) is the best in shielding you from UVB rays, you’re wrong. A product with SPF 24 is equally as effective as another with SPF 90. The difference? The number of minutes you’ll be covered. To compute for this, multiply the SPF by 10. For example, SPF 24 times 10 is 240. That’s the number of minutes that you can be under the sun because you’re protected. That’s already four hours.

For everyday, it’s best to use a product with at least SPF 15. If you’re fair-skinned or will be exposed to outdoor activity for extended periods, use a product with a higher SPF and re-apply every few hours or after swimming or excessive sweating.

SPF ratings apply mainly to UVB rays as there is still no international standard for UVA rating. However, many sunscreen manufacturers include ingredients that protect the skin from some UVA rays as well. Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide and Ethyl/Octyl Methoxycinnamate are active ingredients that offer both UVA and UVB protection. These “broad-spectrum” sunscreens are highly recommended.

UV radiation, a known carcinogen, can have a number of harmful effects on theskin. The two types of UV radiation that can affect the skin—UVA and UVB—have
both been linked to skin cancer and a weakening of the immune system.They also contribute to premature aging of the skin and cataracts (a condition that impairs eyesight), and cause skin colorchanges.

UVA Rays

UVA rays, which are not absorbed by the ozone layer, penetrate deep into the skin and heavily contribute to premature aging. Up to 90 percent of the visible skin changes commonly attributed 3 to aging are caused by sun exposure.

UVB Rays

These powerful rays, which are partially absorbed by the ozone layer, mostly affect the surface of the skin and are the primary cause of sunburn. Because of the thinning of the ozone layer, the effects of UVB radiation will pose an increased threat until the layer is restored in the latter half of the 21st century.

DIRECTIONS / SUGGESTED USE
Apply evenly on face as foundation 20 minutes before sun exposure. Make-up or other skin care products can be applied thereafter. Reapply as needed.
