Frequently Asked Questions About Manuka Honey
What is Manuka?
Manuka is a Maori word for a shrub/small tree called Leptospermum Scoparium. Manuka is a native tree to New Zealand which also well known as tea tree. It is found throughout New Zealand but most commonly found in drier east coast of North Island and South Island. Historically the name arose because Captain Cook used the leaves to make tea drink.
What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka honey is a monofloral (single flower) honey produced by bees which fed only on Manuka flower. Manuka honey from New Zealand comes when beekeepers set up their hives in wild uncultivated areas in which Manuka bushes grow. The bees gather nectar from flowers of the Manuka. Manuka honey comes out in darker colour than normal honey, and has a distinctive and rich taste that is implicative of the flavour of other tea tree products.
What is the difference between regular Manuka honey and Active Manuka Honey?
This is the most interesting and important part, but yet the trickiest part as well. You have to understand this in order to ensure your honey is worth every dollar spent. Regular Manuka honey is used very effectively for treating sore throats, colds, canker sores, fever blisters, acne, pimples, and the best thing is that it also tastes great on toast! It is important to know that both regular and Active Manuka honeys are gathered from the flower of the Manuka bush. The difference between these two honeys is the level of concentration of the non-hydrogen peroxide, which is the additional antibacterial properties that have the ability to destroy a wider range of much more powerful bacteria. The term “Active Manuka Honey†was developed to distinguish Manuka honey that contains non-hydrogen peroxide antibacterial properties from Manuka honey that did contain this activity. A regular Manuka honey is called ‘regular’ because the non-hydrogen peroxide activity cannot be detected in the honey.
What’s so special about Active Manuka Honey?
Honey in general has been used as a medicine since ancient times. Its antibacterial activity is found due to its osmotic effect, acidity, and also mainly due to the hydrogen peroxide (a known antiseptic) produced enzymically in the honey. However, regular honey loses most of its healing properties when it comes in contact with fluids, or when exposed to heat or light.
Unlike regular honey, Active Manuka Honey is not affected by heat or light. It is also important to know that hydrogen peroxide, which is a major antibacterial factor in other types of honeys, will be destroyed by enzymes in our body. Interestingly, non-hydrogen peroxide antibacterial components in Active Manuka Honey are not affected by such enzymes. Active Manuka Honey is highly effective against antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria, e.g. MRSA and VRE. As Active Manuka Honey does not need moisture and

oxygen to be effective, it works greatly under wound dressings or in wound cavities or in the gut. Furthermore, the non-peroxide antibacterial activity of Active Manuka Honey diffuses deeper into skin tissues than does the hydrogen peroxide from other types of honey, making it possible to get to infected areas.
